- Luis Suarez’s legendary strike gave Barcelona a narrow 1-0 victory condemning Espanyol to the Segunda División on Wednesday at Camp Nou.
Barca were determined to win and retain their La Liga title hopes against all odds. They missed a good chance in the first half came when Messi’s free-kick was tipped over and then Suárez’s shot was deflected wide.
Suarez struck the winner in the second half after both squads remained with 10 men. Ansu Fati was sent off for Barca and Espanyol’s Pol Lozano followed a few minutes later.
This was not an ordinary goal for Suarez as it takes him into third place in the list Barcelona’s best scorers. He is now ranked past László Kubala marking a career landmark for him.
“I just feel privileged to be able to enjoy playing for the best team in the world,” Suarez said.
“We knew it was going to be difficult and we knew their situation. We didn’t create chances in the first half because they were very organised. They made it difficult for Semedo and Alba to push up on the flanks but eventually, the chance came and I was delighted to take it.” He added.
“The manager takes the decisions. He wanted to find a formula and this is the one he’s trying at the moment. It’s the first year for Antoine here, we know it’s difficult the adaptation period, but the other day we all enjoyed a brilliant performance from Griezmann.
“What we have to do is win our next three games, whatever Madrid do is up to them. If they drop points fantastic, we have to think about being there if they do. “he concluded
Barca is now a point behind Real Madrid who are out of action until Friday when they will be taking on Alaves.
