Preview and Prediction
The Saints unusually stunning start has colored the beginning of Premier League 2020/21 season. They are now considered as one of the several dark horses alongside Aston Villa, Everton and surely Leicester City to shake off the dominance of the traditional big five. Although it is way to soon to expect them stay in the top six for the European campaign next season, Southampton seems to have what it takes to compete those spots. This weekend, they will be tested while hosting the stronger side, Manchester United.
The teams’ previous matches
Southampton managed to keep their unbeaten run last weekend while taking on Wolverhampton on the road. Che Adams and Co were held in a 1-1 draw. They took the lead first by Theo Walcott but Pedro Neto was able to put Wolves back on a level terms as he tucked away the ball from Raul Jimenez’s shot which bounced back in front of him.
Meanwhile, Manchester United finally had their revenge on Istanbul Basaksehir which humiliated them before the international break. On matchday four of Champions League, The Red Devils trashed the Turkish side 4-1. Bruno Fernandes once again was the key figure in the game by bagging a brace. The remaining two goals was scored by Marcus Rashford and Daniel James. The visitors could only respond once.
The former RB Leipzig boss, Ralph Hassenhutl is likely to deploy 4-4-2 again here with Theo Walcott and Che Adams as the front duo. In the midfield, Moussa Djenepo and Stuart Amstrong will be operating on both flanks while James Ward-Prowse and Oriol Romeu are supporting in the middle. On the injury table, Danny Ings, Nathan Redmond and William Smallbone are still ruled out.
Meanwhile, Ole Solskjaer still opts for 4-2-3-1 with Bruno Fernandes leading the attack as always. Anthony Martial is still the main frontman but Edison Cavani can be brought on later to break the deadlock. His starting IX is not likely to change as only a few names are injured such as Luke Shaw, Paul Pogba and Eric Baily.
Players to watch
Without Danny Ings on the pitch, the former Arsenal and Everton man, Theo Walcott will be the one to count on to score beside Che Adams who has notched up three goals and provided three assists.
In The Red Devils, The Portuguese international is irreplacable in their attacking line registering six goals and three assists in Premier League so far. Another notable name to watch is Marcus Rashford.
Southampton vs Manchester United Prediction
Hassenhutl’s men might be solid but they will face a serious threat against Marcus Rashford and Co who are on the creative side with Bruno Fernandes in it. The Saints need to be cautious in their defensive-attacking transition so that at least they could clinch one point in their home turf.
The clash is probably even and neither side is the favourite in this match. Southampton are backed to win at 3/1, whereas Manchester United is in the win market at 1/1. The odd for the draw result is at the value of 27/10.
