The finalist of previous Copa America edition, Peru is taking on Paraguay in the quarter final. Ricardo Gareca’s men had to wait till the final game to seal one place in the last eight by finishing second on the table. Paraguay, on the other hand, could only sit on the third in the group A final standings. Both sides are quite equal and expected to have an entertaining match with both sides trading attacks. The match will be staged in Goiania.
Both teams’ updated news
Peru managed to entail Brasil on the second place after thumping Venezuela 1-0. After knocking on the doors, Andre Carillo finally found the back of the net from a rebound, which is enough to send them to the next stage.
Paraguay, on the other hand, was beaten 0-1 by Uruguay in the final match of group stage. Their only concession came from Edison Cavani’s penalty. Angel Romero and Co had to go down to the third of the table, instead of finishing on the second.
Ricarddo Gareca is still likely to deploy 4-2-3-1 formation by relying on Andre Carillo upfront as the frontman who could also play out wide on both flanks. If he does operate on the wing, Gianluca Papadula shall be the main forward. In the midfield, Renato Tapia will be in command of the build up as well as the defensive midfielder.
Meanwhile, Gareca’s junior, also the Argentina-born boss, Eduardo Berizzo still opts for 3-5-1-1 formation. Fabian Balbuena, Gustavo Gomez and Omar Aldrete are still featuring on the backline. Alejandro Romero would occupy in the midfield to support Angel Romero and Oscar Romero or Antonio Bareiro. Miguel Almiron’s injury would be a huge blow for them.
Players to watch
Peru’s current top performer in the tournament is Al Hilal man Andre Carillo, who has notched up two goals so far. Some other key figures in the team are Benevento’s Gianluca Lapadula, Celta Vigo midfielder Renato Tapia and the goalie Pedro Gallese.
San Lorenzo forward, Angel Romero, has scored twice so far in this year’s competition. Another important name in the line up is the skipper Gustavo Gomez who plays alongside Hertha Berlin man Omar Alderete at the backline.
Peru vs Paraguay Prediction
The injury of Miguel Almiron would put Paraguay in difficulty since the Newcastle man is the figure who could provide assists as well as intensity in the set piece scenario. Andre Carillo and Co should take such advantage to secure one place at the semifinal. Peru’s chance to win is certainly bigger here, unless Berizzo’s men could leave them frustrated and hold on till the final whistle to let the penalties decide their fate, which is still likely as well.
Neither side is the favourite here. Ricardo Gareca’s men’s the win market at 15/7, while the value for a draw is at 2/1, which is the highest, whereas Paraguay’s odds to win are only at 31/18.
