Preview and Prediction
Il Partenopei is playing at home again consecutively in the past two weeks, just in the right moment when their legend and saviour, Diego Maradona passed away. There is no better way than securing a victory this weekend as a tribute for his great contribution while taking on AS Roma which sits on the third of the table. Dries Mertens and Co must win for the spirit of El Diego who is surely disappointed with their position on the sixth in the standings.
The teams’ previous matches
Napoli sealed their first win after Maradona’s departure when they defeated Rijeka 2-0 in the Europa League last Thursday. Matteo Politano and Hirving Lozano bagged the winning goals. Such result put them on the top of the table.
AS Roma also played on the same day and managed to win over CFR Cluj on the road in the same score as their contenders. The goals came from Gabriel Debeljuh’s own goal and Jordan Veretrout’s penalty. This win also keep Edin Dzeko and Co on the top.
Gennaro Gattusso might not be able to employ his best starting IX since Victor Osimhen, Amir Rrahmani and Timoue Bakayoko are sidelined due to the injury and suspension plus Elseid Hysaj who tested positive COVID-19. Thus, Dries Mertens or the former SPAL forward Andre Petagna will be featuring as the targetman, while Hirving Lozano and Lorenzo Insigne operate outwide.
Meanwhile, Paulo Fonseca is still opting for 3-4-2-1 with Edin Dzeko upfront supported by Henrikh Mikhitariyan and Pedro behind him. On the injury table, there are three names ruled out, Javier Pastore, Nicolo Zaniolo and Marash Kumbulla.
Players to watch
The Mexican international Hirving Lozano is expected to make his contribution again. He has netted four goals and made one assist so far. Some other key figures to watch here are the versatile Matteo Politano, Dries Mertens and Fabian Ruiz.
In Il Gioallorossi, the former Arsenal man, Henrikh Mikhitariyan seems to be on fire at the early stage this season. The Armenian international has netted six goals and provided five assists. Another vital man in Roma this season is their new signing on free transfer, Pedro.
Napoli vs Roma Prediction
Napoli’s inconsistency seems to be something Gatusso need to work on soon if they are to aim for the Champions League place at the end of the season. Yet, expecting them to snatch a win here is also tough as Roma’s front trio, Dzeko, Mikhitariyan and Pedro, seems to have found the rhythm they need. However, Gatusso’s men might be more motivated to clinch a victory for Maradona. In the end, both teams might have to share the spoil.
