Preview and Prediction
Last year, Frank Lampard ruined his Premier League debut with Chelsea by a humiliating 0-4 loss against Ole Solksjaer side. Surely, such defeat must be avoided this season when Chelsea have spent more than 200 million Euros to revamp the team this summer. This weekend the former Chelsea star will return to Old Trafford with more confidence to snatch points. Yet, The Red Devils have bounced back from their shocking defeat before the international break. It is certainly the most anticipated clash on match day six of Premier League this season.
Both teams’ previous games
Manchester United managed to continue their positive form in the continental competition in the midweek. They thumped PSG 2-1 on the road on match day one of UCL. Bruno Fernandes penalty got him on the score sheet before Anthony Martial’s own goal equalised on the second half. Luckily, Marcus Rashford’s strike to the far post found the back of the net afterwards.
Meanwhile, The Blues had to be satisfied with one point at home while facing off the Europa League champions, Sevilla. They could only muster a goalless draw and had a difficulty in breaking the deadlock or even creating shots on goals.
Ole Solskjaer finally employed 3-4-1-2 in the midweek which led to a victory in Paris. He is likely to do it again but this time the former PSG man, Edison Cavani might be given a chance in the starting IX to accompany Marcus Rashford upfront and supported by Bruno Fernandes as Anthony Martial is still suspended. In the midfield, Danny Van de Beek or Nemanja Matic and Paul Pogba shall operate in the middle.
His counterpart, Frank Lampard seems contented by Eduard Mendy’s form in the previous game and the Senegal international will earn his spot again. However, he is still in need of optimising his squad’s potential for better results against the high profile team. Thus, he should consider opting for 3-4-2-1. Kai Havertz’s role as the false nine or targetman as he did last season with Bayer Leverkusen might stun Solksjaer’s men. Behind him, Timo Werner and Christian Pulisic or Mason Mount will provide support for the German youngster. At the back, Thiago Silva, Kurt Zouma and Antonio Rudinger are the best choice on their defence line.
Players to watch
Marcus Rashford and Bruno Fernandes are inevitably the vital figures of the team. The former has netted three goals and provided two assists while the latter has scored four goals and two assists in all competition. Another notable name to watch here is Aaron Wan Bissaka.
In Chelsea, their two new signings from Bundesliga, Timo Werner and Kai Havertz, have slowly shown their true quality. Another key man to watch here is the former Leicester man, Ben Chilwell.
Man United vs Chelsea Prediction
This exciting clash potentially becomes a thrilling encounter, especially since both sides have speedy forwards as well as prolific scorers, Marcus Rashford and Timo Werner. The only thing which could make the difference is on the tactical creativity. Nevertheless, sharing one point each might be more plausible.
