Preview and Prediction
Manchester United was on the cloud nine a couple of weeks ago, by leading the standings and toppling the reigning champions and old rival, Liverpool. Yet, they do not realise that the season is still far from over and there is still Manchester City, previously lurking but now taking over the top. This midweek, Solksjaer’s men can not lose points any longer when they play host to Southampton if they really aim for a silverware this season.
Both teams’ previous games
The Red Devils could only muster a goalless draw while taking on Arsenal on the road. It is their second winless run consecutively and has been unable to score a single goal against Arsenal this season.
The Saints even had worse result than their contender. They suffered a narrow loss against Aston Villa by a single goal of Ross Barkley. The lady luck did not smile at them too as VAR controversially denied Hassenhutl’s men’s goal due to the suspicion of an offside position. They are now stuck on the 11th of the table.
Ole Solskjaer is likely to employ the same formation as before with Bruno Fernandes as the anchorman to support Edison Cavani from behind the winger role will be occupied by Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood. Anthony Martial can be brought on from the bench in the second half. The only concern for Solskajer is the absence of Scott McTominay due to his injury. The Scotsman’ position might be given to Fred or Nemanja Matic.
Meanwhile, Ralph Hassenhutl has always been in favour of 4-4-2 with the quick transition to 4-2-2-2. Unfortunately, Theo Walcott is ruled out here, alongside Jannik Vestergaard, Kyle-Walter Peiters, William Smallbonr, Oriol Romeu and his back up Ibrahim Diallo, which leaves Moussa Djenepo to fill the void but still big question to cover the former La Masia graduate.
Players to watch
Manchester United’s key man, Bruno Fernandes with eleven goals and seven assists in Premier League so far is still the irreplacable figure this season. Another one who could be the catalyst in breaking the deadlock is the Uruguayan international, Edison Cavani who has netted four goals and provided two assists.
Danny Ings might be the top scorer of the club but the others’ contribution is also worth-noting. The Scottsman Stuart Amstrong, Che Adams and the midfielder James Ward-Prowse are the key men in The Saints’ starting IX.
Manchester United vs Southampton Prediction
Marcus Rashford and Co need to be more clinical in the six yard box to optimise any decent chances. Such was something they lacked of in the last outings. Once they can cope it, a three points at home can be easily secured, especially considering the absence of Hassenhutl’s vital figures at the back and defensive midfielders.
According to the punters, the home side is backed to win at 6/11, whereas Che Adams and Co are projected to win at 32/5. The odds for a draw result are at the value of 7/2.
