Preview and Prediction
This Manchester derby, in the previous seasons, normally takes place when both are sitting on the top four or even involved in a title race. Yet, this time, The Red Devils and The Citizens are outside the elite positions. Solksjaer’s men are on the sixth with nineteen points while Kevin de Bruyne and Co are just below them separated by one point. However, the clash will still be as exciting as before, especially since the Norwegian boss’s future is in danger again while Guardiola is aiming for restoring his reputation as the top manager by improving Manchester City’s unconvincing campaign.
The teams’ previous games
The Red Devils were just beaten in Europe this midweek while travelling to Leipzig on Tuesday. In the game which they needed to snatch maximum point, Marcus Rashford and Co had to lose 2-3. They conceded three goals already by Angelino, Amadou Haidara and Justin Kluivert and only responded twice by Bruno Fernandes’ penalty and Ibrahima Konate’s own goal.
Manchester City, on the other hand, secured three points at home while taking on Marseille. Ferran Torres, Sergio Aguero and Alvaro Gonzalez’s own goal gave them maximum points on matchday six this midweek.
Ole Solksjaer, is likely to opt for 4-3-3 or 4-3-2-1 after his 3-defender system did not work well. Bruno Fernandes is still the anchor man in their attack. Yet, relying him too much only means his tactical approach can be easily anticipated. Thus, Solksjaer could employ Danny Van de Beek to support the Portuguese international’s role and possibly share it by operating behind Marcus Rashford. The ones on the injury table are Edison Cavani and Anthony Martial.
His counterpart, Pep Guardiola surely would still be in favour of 4-3-3. With no major injuries in his squad, Gabi Jesus, Raheem Sterling and Riyad Mahrez or Phil Foden are likely to get a nod in the starting IX. In the midfield, Kevin De Bruyne will occupy the playmaking role as always.
Players to watch
The England international Marcus Rashford who has registered three goals and four assists in EPL and UCL. Another notable name to watch is the Brasilian full back Alex Telles
Meanwhile, in Manchester City, the versatile Phil Foden is one of the key men this season, He has bagged three goals and provided three assists in all competition. Another vital figure to focus on is the Spanish youngster Ferran Torres.
Manchester United vs Manchester City Prediction
The pressure to win is certainly bigger on the home side. Solksjaer’s men are expected to clinch a win to bounce back from their disappointing defeat in the midweek. Guardiola’s side should take advantage of this by exploiting United’s defensive frailties and close down Bruno Fernandes. If such can be done well, the host will be in trouble. The visitors could steal three points here or at least one point.
Neither side is the favourite here. The host’s win market is at 18/5, whereas The Citizens are priced to win at 13/16. The odds for the draw result are at the value of 33/10.
