The weekend fixture was a disappointing one for Manchester City. Their 28 unbeaten run ended on the hand of their local contender. It may not change their position in the standings and they are still practically safe from their rival chase with eleven points clear but in Pep Guardiola’s eyes, such is a flaw. In the next outing, three points are absolutely in need to be sealed considering they only play host to Southampton. Ralph Hassenhutl’s men are on the opposite circumstance as they just ended their winless run in the past nine games of Premier League.
The teams’ previous games
The Citizens were rather unlucky in the Manchunian derby last weekend. They were beaten by Ole Solksajer’s men 0-2 by Bruno Fernandes’s penalty and Luke Shaw’s long range strike after making an overlap. It is their third loss of the season.
The Saints, on the other hand, were able to clinch their first victory after thumping Sheffield United 2-0 on the road. James Ward-Prowse opened the scoring through a penalty while Che Adams doubled their lead through a bullet long-range shot.
Pep Guardiola has always been in favour of 4-3-3 formation with more flexible transition this season. However, Raheem Sterling and Co must be more clinical in their finish, something which Pep has concerned previously and came true in the important game against United. They wasted at least two decent chances which were supposed to make the difference in the match.
His counterpart, Ralph Hassenhutl, is still likely to deploy 4-4-2 formation, which proves to be the effective to possibly beat the Citizens. The Austrian boss’ only concern is the absence of their key men, Danny Ings, Theo Walcott and Oriol Romeu plus Michael Obafemi and William Smallbone. Thus, Che Adams might feature as the targetman with Takumi Minamino while Diallo will cover Romeu’s absence and Nathan Redmond is playing on the flank to take over Walcott’s post.
Players to watch
The trident, Riyad Mahrez, Raheem Sterling and Phil Foden or Gabi Jesus are expected to do better in the penalty box here. Sterling and Foden missed the goal opportunity in the previous outing. Another key man to watch here is the Spanish defensive midfielder, Rodrigo.
The 24-year old Che Adams will be the vital figure for scoring. He has netted five goals and provided four assists. Another notable name to watch is the midfielder, James Ward-Prowse who has contributed six goals and five assists so far.
Manchester City vs Southampton Prediction
Pep Guardiola will push their players not to make the same mistake again here to bounce back and seal the win and hopefully the title soon so that they can focus on other tournaments ahead. However, Manchester City should be careful with Southampton’s potential revival, which could disrupt their consistency and hope to regain the silverware again. The Citizens will still be able to pick up three points eventually.
According to the punters, Manchester City is the clear favorite. They are backed to win at 4/17, whereas Jannik Vestergaard and Co’s win market is at 16/1. The draw result is at the value of 32/5.
