Manchester City and Chelsea are apparently destined to be the rivals this season. They are bound to have more encounters this season, after both managed to advance to Champions League final. Previously, both have shared a win each in two meetings, The Citizens won in the reverse fixture but The Blues got their revenge in FA Cup semifinals. This weekend they will be squaring off again before locking horns in Istanbul for UCL final at the end of this month. As the league leaders, they soon will clinch the Premier League title but this is no longer about winning but studying more about the future opponents. What’s more, this is crucial for Chelsea to seal one Champions League spot next season.
The teams’ previous games
The Citizens had a triumphant game in the midweek while smashing PSG 2-0 in the UCL semifinals. Riyad Mahrez was the man of the match with his brace. He helped securing their first Champions League final ever.
Their counterpart, Chelsea finally reached their third UCL final after dismantling Real Madrid 2-0 in the midweek. Timo Werner bagged an opener while Mason Mount sealed their place in the final as he found the back of the net five minutes before the final whistle.
Pep Guardiola does not seem to worry anymore when his team lacks of frontman. The Spanish boss could deploy 4-3-3 with the transition to 4-6-0 or 4-2-2-2 without a single striker, just like what he did in the midweek. Phil Foden, Riyad Mahrez, Bernardo Silva, Kevin de Bruyne can be swapping positions to feature as false nine, number ten or wingers when necessary. The only name in their injury table is John Stones.
Meanwhile, Thomas Tuchel has been more confident with his 3-4-1-2 formation which can transform to 3-1-4-2, 3-5-2 or 3-4-2-1 when necessary. Kai Havertz and Timo Werner have found their rhythm in Tuchel’s system. The German duo will be supported by Mason Mount
Players to watch
The former Leicester man, Riyad Mahrez, has been the main scorer in the past few games. The Algerian international has netted 13 goals and provided six assists in Premier League and champions League. Another key man to watch is the skipper Kevin de Bruyne with eight goals and 15 assists in both competitions too.
In Chelsea, Timo Werner has contributed 10 goals and nine assists in EPL and UCL, while Kai Havertz has bagged four goals and provided five assist. Another notable figure this season is Mason Mount with 8 goals and six assists so far.
Manchester City vs Chelsea Prediction
Considering the objective, Pep Guardiola might rest some of his key men and rotate the squad by employing Gabi Jesus, Sterling and Ferran Torres up front. He would be weighing several options to test their attacking lines against Chelsea’s solid defence. Thomas Tuchel’s men might still be playing with some key figures in the line up as they still need more points to avoid West Ham below which is only three points adrift from them. This clash might end in a stalemate.
This encounter is meant to be a tight affair. Yet, Chelsea seems to be slight favourite. NGolo Kante and Co are priced to win at 7/2, whereas Kevin de Bruyne and Co’s win market is at 39/40. The odds for the draw result are at 45/17.
