Preview and Prediction
The table is turning in Premier League, for the defending champions, Liverpool and their contender in the past three seasons, Manchester City. Last year in the early season, The Reds were still at the top while Pep Guardiola’s men slipped and were stranded on the mid table. Yet, now, The Citizens are leading while Mo Salah and Co are stuck on the fourth and the title race is fading from them if they do not improve and stay consistent for the rest of the season.
The teams’ previous games
Their home game in the midweek was stained again with their loss. This time it was another team nearby the relegation zone, Brighton by a single goal of Steven Alzate. The Reds were lacking of clinical finish again and frustrated them to break Brighton’s overcrowding the backline. Such is their second home defeat this season.
Manchester City, on the other hand, kept their clean sheet in the past six games of Premier League. Last weekend, they defeated Burnley 2-0 on the road. Gabi Jesus and Raheem Strling were the scorer of the game.
Jurgen Klopp could be deploying 3-4-1-2 or 4-3-1-2 with Mo Salah and Firmino or Divok Origi up front, Yet, their inconsistency and lack of deadly finish once again proves that Klopp’s tactics needs more modification. The injury of Sadio Mane and Diego Jota alongside Joe Gomez, Joel Matip and Virgil Van Dijk really concerns the German boss as they are the key men in the squad, not to mention Alisson whose physical fitness is still in doubt. Their new signings, Ozan Kabak could be playing in the second half.
Pep Guardiola will still be employing 4-3-3 formation which can be flexible in any situation. Unfortunately, some vital figures of the team, such as Kevin de Bruyne is on the sideline due to the injury along with Sergio Aguero and Nathan Ake. The frontman trio in Guardiola’s side will be Gabi Jesus, Raheem Sterling and Bernardo Silva.
Players to watch
The Reds seem to be relying too much on Mo Salah , plus Sadio Mane and Firmino to score. This is something Klopp needs to work on so that they would not be scoreless while the trident is not in-form. Xerdan Shaqiri, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain plus Gini Wijnaldum could be the alternative to score from the second line.
The top performers in the Citizens apart from De Bruyne are Ilkay Gundogan whose goals are equal to Sterling, the top scorer of the club this season, Joao Cancelo and the former Leicester man Riyad Mahrez. He has netted five goals and provided two assists.
Liverpool vs Manchester City Prediction
None can really predict this mouth watering clash of two title contenders. The Reds’ inconsistency could be the decisive factor for the result of the game. It will be quite a challenge for Jordan Henderson and Co to secure three points regarding their crisis at the backline. The draw for both sides seems more likely, or perhaps even another loss for Klopp’s men.
The clash is expected to be tight. The home side’s win market is at 28/11, whereas Raheem Sterling and Co men are only projected to win at 26/19. The odds for the draw result are at 14/5.
