Preview and Prediction
It is Derby della Capitale this weekend. Yet, this season both sides are separated quite far on the table. Roma is sitting on the third with 34 points while Lazio is down on eighth with 28 points in hand. It may not be a decisive game between these two teams but certainly crucial for their own mission. Roma aims to return in the Champions League and staying on the top four means you have to keep winning, while Lazio is simply in need of more consistency to improve their form.
The teams’ previous matches
Lazio secured another win while travelling to Parma. They had to struggle before eventually scoring twice at the first half by the former Liverpool man, Luis Alberto and the Ecuadorian Felipe Caicedo. It is their second win respectively.
Their local contender had a tough encounter against the runner up Inter Milan. They were held in a 2-2 draw at home. It was a thriller and both sides traded goals. Lorenzo Pellegrini opened the scoring then Martin Skriniar equalised. Not long after, Achraf Hakimi found the back of the net from his long-range shot. Giallorossi finally was level as Gianluca Mancini’s header saved them from a defeat.
Simone Inzaghi still sticks to his favourite 3-5-2 or 3-5-1-1 and 3-4-2-1 since day one in Lazio. Ciro Immobile is still the main scorer and he will be supported by Felipe Caicedo and Luis Alberto behind him since Joaquin Correa is injured. The other ones on the injury table at the moment are Thomas Strakosha, Danilo Cataldi and Senad Lulic.
Meanwhile, Paulo Fonseca has been in favour of rather similar 3-4-2-1 formation which has led to their unbeaten run lately. Edin Dzeko is still the targetman supported by Pedro and Henrikh Mikhitariyan. Unfortunately, several names in the squad have to be sidelined such as Nico Zaniolo, Antonio Mirante, Javier Pastore and Davide Santon.
Players to watch
Ciro Immobile is still the main scorer with eleven goals and two assists. Yet, if he is unable to break a deadlock, Felipe Caicedo is the right man to do the task. He has notched up seven goals in all competition. Another key man to watch is the Serbian international, Sergej Milenkovic-Savic.
In Roma, the former Manchester United man and Arsenal man Henrikh Mikhitariyan has been one of the top performers recently. He has scored eight goals and made eight assists. Some other key figures of the team beside the captain Dzeko are the former Chelsea winger, Pedro, Lorenzo Pellegini and the midfielder Jordan Veretrout.
Lazio vs Roma Prediction
It is bound to be the system for the back-three formation as well as last weekend. Lazio will have a challenging opponent here. Ciro Immobile and Co have to be more clinical in their finish, this is something Roma is slightly better this season. A draw seems to be another fair result here.
