The third place play off between Colombia and Peru is none but a chance for both sides to try out new formation, line-up or tactical approach. Reinaldo Rueda and Ricardo Gareca are likely to play their reserved teams or young players in the squad so that they can have more international experience as well as in a major tournament. The match will be held in Estadio Mane Garrincha, Brasilia.
Both teams’ previous games
Colombia was rather unlucky at the semifinal. They were beaten by Argentina 2-3 in a penalty shoot out after holding them in a 1-1 draw. Yerry Mina and Co were one goal behind when Lautaro Martinez opened the scoring, but Luis Diaz could equalise on the second half. In the penalties, three of their executors failed to score.
Peru was unable to stop Brasil at the semifinal as they were thumped by the host through a single goal of Lucas Paqueta. The former AC Milan midfielder took the advantage of Neymar’s pass in the penalty box.
Reinaldo Rueda would still employ 4-4-2 formation. Frankfurt’s new signing, Rafael Borre could be paired up with Glasgow Rangers man Alfredo Morelos. In the midfield, Edwin Cardona shall be leading the attack accompanied by Sebastian Perez, Gustavo Cuellar, Yumi Chara and Wilmar Barrios.
Ricardo Gareca is likely to be in favour of 4-5-1 formation with Gianluca Lapadula as the lone striker, or playing 4-4-2 with Luis Iberico and Alex Valera. In the midfield, Wilder Cartagena, Alexis Arias and Raziel Garcia could be deployed to accompany Renato Tapia.
Players to watch
Alfredo Morelos should have a chance to prove Rueda that he can be the new forward to count on in the next fixtures of World Cup qualifiers as Colombian main strikers in the tournament, Luis Muriel and Duvan Zapata have been unable to score a single goal so far.
Peru might be relying on Celta Vigo man Renato Tapia to be the anchorman in the middle. Some other key men to watch are the goalie Pedro Gallesse and Sergio Pena.
Colombia vs Peru Prediction
In this unlikely rewarding encounter, it will be more like a friendly match. Considering the names in the squad, Yerry Mina and Co shall be the stronger side and could avenge their loss at the group stage if the attacking lines in the line up can improve their clinical finish.
