Preview and Prediction
The Blues’ position in the standings is not safe yet. It can still be taken over by Manchester United who has been in a magnificent form this season after the arrival of Bruno Fernandes. With only five-point margin, their threat is real. Therefore, they have keep winning in the remaining eight games of Premier League to secure the Champions League place, including the tough one this midweek against the defending Champions Manchester City.
The teams’ previous matches
Chelsea’s form after the restart is still satisfactory. Last week, they thumped Aston Villa 2-1 in Villa Park. the host’s defender Kortney Hause gave the Villans the lead at the first half. Yet, Lampard’s men could overturn the score sheet by two clinical goals from Christian Pulisic and the French veteran Olivier Giroud.
The Citizens continued their usual good form while hosting Burnley last Monday. They smashed them five goals to nil. Their youngster Phil Foden and Riyad Mahrez scored a brace each plus one extra goal by David Silva. It was an expected result for the home side.
Frank Lampard normally employs 4-3-3 this season but he might opt for 3-4-2-1 against Manchester City as it is suitable to close down their space for creativity and acceleration plus striking back with long shots which Guardiola’s men mainly have a problem to anticipate this season. Kevin de Bruyne and David Silva could be the main target in the midfield. Fortunately, the ones on the sideline are the reserved players such as Fikayo Tomori, Callum-Hudson Odoi and Marco Van Ginkel.
The 4-3-3 formation will still be the main option for Pep Guardiola. However, he will not be able to play his best starting IX as Sergio Aguero, Phil Foden and John Stones are injured. Thus, Gabi Jesus will step up as the main forward supported by Raheem Sterling and Riyad Mahrez as the trident at the front.
Players to watch
Tammy Abraham has been one of the top performers this season and expected to continue his terrific form. However, the ones who might steal the spotlight in this upcoming fixture are the American Christian Pulisic and the Spaniard Marcos Alonso. The former scored his six goals in the previous match while the latter one has netted four goals and made two assists.
In The Citizens’ squad, Kevin de Bruyne has always been the key figure of the team as the top assist provider his contribution will always be a threat for their opponents. Another notable name to watch is probably Gabi Jesus. This Brazilian striker has bagged five goals and made five assists.
Chelsea vs Manchester City Prediction
The visit to Stamford Bridge has always been worrying for Guardiola, including this one eventhough the game is behind closed doors. Lampard’s men might be less experienced than Raheem Sterling and Co. Yet, they always have potential to stumble them. A draw seems to be the fair result.
Willian and Co are certainly not considered as the favourite despite playing at home. They are only priced to win at 4.00, the same odds for the draw result. Manchester City’s win market is at 1.40.
