Preview and Prediction
Atletico Madrid is on the mission to extend their margin from Real Madrid and Barcelona which are already approaching with only one and four points difference. Luckily, they still have three games in hand, including the last weekend’s fixture. Koke and Co will be hosting Sevilla which are sitting on the sixth in the standings. Julen Lopetegui’s men aim for the maximum points to overtake Real Sociedad above them.
Both teams’ previous games
Los Choconeros were supposed to take on Athletic Bilbao last weekend but the match was postponed due to the snowstorm in Madrid. It was reported that the snow covered the pitch in Wanda Metropolitano. There has been no confirmation date yet on when the game will take place.
Meanwhile, Sevilla secured an important 3-2 win over their contender Real Sociedad. Youssef En-Neysri netted his first hattrick in La Liga in that game while Sociedad could only reply twice from Diego Carlos’s own goal and Alexander Isak’s goal.
Diego Simeone has been more comfortable with his 3-4-3 formation lately. Yet, Joao Felix is doubtful to play here meaning that Luis Suarez might be the lone striker upfront supported by Angel Correa and Thomas Lemar. Some other names on the injury table is only the Mexican international Hector Herrera. The England international Kieran Trippier is expected to return in the starting IX after his ban was suspended.
Meanwhile, Julen Lopetegui still sticks to his favourite 4-3-3 formation. His main front three, En-Neysri, Lucas Ocampos and Jose Suso will bring serious threat to Atletico, supported by Fernando Reges, Joan Jordan and Oliver Torres. Several names are still ruled out for this fixture including the goalie Tomas Vaclik, Sergio Escudero and Carlos Fernandez.
Players to watch
The former Liverpool and Barcelona man, Luis Suarez is the club’s current top scorer with nine goals followed by the versatile midfielder Marcos Llorente registering six goals and two assists. One key man to focus on in this fixture is Thomas Lemar who could create chances as well as space for his teammates in the six-yard box with his acceleration and physical prowess.
Sevilla’s top performers of the season are the defender Jules Kunde, the Argentine winger Lucas Ocampos who has bagged three goals and provided four assists and Fernando Reges. Another notable name to watch is surely their Moroccan scorer, En-Neysri.
Atletico Madrid vs Sevilla Prediction
Diego Simeone’s men have the longer rest for their advantage, which could be useful here. Sevilla’s defensive frailties could be exposed by Luis Suarez and Joao Felix plus Thomas Lemar to seal their fourth win in La Liga consecutively, unless Lucas Ocampos and Co can keep up their good form like the one in the previous outing. Nevertheless, a narrow win for the home side is more likely.
Neither side is the favourite here. Luis Suarez and Co are backed to win at 13/11, whereas Lopetegui’s men’s odds to win are at 17/5. The draw result is at the value of at 11/5.
