For some star players, this year’s Copa America could be their last one. Those may include Lionel Messi, Sergio Aguero from Albiceleste and Diego Godin, Edison Cavani plus Luis Suarez from La Celeste. It would not be a surprise if they would be striving to make the best memories in this tournament by winning it. Yet, the road to the final is still long and winding. At first, they will have to square off this weekend at the group stage. This clash will take place in Estadio Mane Garrincha, Brasilia.
Both teams’ updated news
Argentina once again only mustered a 1-1 draw against Chile. Messi’s delicious free kick which gave them the lead failed to help them to a victory as Eduardo Vargas’s header taking advantage of the deflected penalty from Arturo Vidal cancelled their prospective three points. Lionel Scaloni’s men had a number of chances but none was capitalised into another goal.
Uruguay will be playing their first game here. Oscar Tabarez decided to call up the senior names again apart from Suarez and Godin, such as Edison Cavani, Sebastian Coates and Martin Caceres but left out Cagliari’s Gaston Pereiro, Getafe men Mauro Arambari and Damian Suarez and Celtic wing back, Diego Laxalt.
Lionel Scaloni might need to prepare a back up formation as his regular 4-3-1-2 has been failing to deliver another win. They have been winless in the last three games and this is just the right time to end it to boost his team’s confidence. Deploying 3-4-2-1 might be considerable with Messi and Angel Correa playing behind the frontman Lautaro Martinez. In the midfield, Carlos Paredes and Rodrigo de Paul accompanied by Marcus Acuna and Gonzalo Montiel playing as wing backs, while Christian Romero, Nicolas Otamendi and Lisandro Martinez are operating on the backline.
Oscar Tabarez is likely to return to his 4-4-2 formation since Cavani made his way back to Uruguay national team. The Manchester United man would be paired up with Luis Suarez upfront supported by Federico Valverde, Rodrigo Bentacur, Nahitan Nandez and Lucas Torreira from the second line.
Players to watch
Apart from the skipper Messi, some names are expected to shine at this tournament such as Inter Milan scorer Lautaro Martinez and VFB Stuttgart versatile, Nicolas Gonzalez plus Udinese man Rodrigo de Paul.
The senior duet, Edison Cavani-Luis Suarez, shall make their return here. The former has netted 51 goals while the latter has contributed 63 goals in the same caps, 118. Some other notable names to watch are Real Madrid versatile midfielder, Federico Valverde and Cagliari’s Nahitan Nandez.
Argentina vs Uruguay Prediction
Messi anc Co might be struggling again here to snatch a win. Their winless run could continue by another stalemate result considering Uruguay’s more solid defensive stance. Should Argentina not change their tactical approach, the result will still be the same as both sides settle one point each.
Albiceleste is still regarded as the favourite here with the win market at 11/10, while the value for a draw is at 27/10, whereas Oscar Tabarez’s side are projected to win only at 23/10.
