Preview and Prediction
Rossonero is still leading the table but three point margins from their local contender, Inter Milan, is certainly not enough to feel confident in a title race. No wonder that they have brought new reinforcement on the attack and defence to add the depth of their squad, especially when the Europa League fixtures start next month. To keep their lead, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Co will need to make sure their positive run endure, including in the next outing against Atalanta.
The teams’ previous matches
Milan showed their superiority again while defeating Cagliari 2-0 last weekend. Ibrahimovic returned at the right time and bagged a brace to keep their three point cushion from Inter at the top.
Atalanta had to struggle to pick up one point against Udinese on the road last weekend. The home side opened the scoresheet by the former Juventus man, Roberto Peyrera. Yet, Luis Muriel managed to draw levels through his goal.
Stefano Pioli is still in favour of 4-2-3-1 formation. The return of Ibrahimovic has given his team a boost along with the arrival of Mario Madzukic. Yet, the absence of Hakan Calhanoglu, Theo Hernandez, Matteo Gabbia, Simon Kjaer and Alexis Saelemakers might concern Pioli more. Brahim Diaz could take over Calhanoglu’s post while Diego Dalot is featuring Theo Hernandez’s post.
Gian Gasperini’s preference to the fluid 3-4-3 with the transition to 3-4-2-1 or 3-4-1-2
has not been working well since Papu Gomez sits out of the team due to the row happening between them resulting to another failure for the team. Ruslan Malinovsky remains the one who takes over the playmaking role but lacks of creativity while breaking the deadlock, unlike the Argentine.
Players to watch
Ibrahimovic’s display in the last outing adds his tally to 12 goals in Serie A. Some other key figures of the team are Franck Kessie, the Portuguese youngster Rafael Leao who has contributed five goals and four assists plus Davide Calabria.
La Dea’s top performers beside Papu Gomez are the Slovenian international Josip Illicic who has notched up two goals and provided five assists, the German full back Robin Gosens who has registered five goals and made three assists in Serie A and the Argentine defender, Christian Romero. Another key man to watch is surely the top scorer with eleven goals and two assists, Luis Muriel.
Milan vs Atalanta Prediction
The reinforcement in San Siro would likely get a nod here when they are in crisis. Madzukic’s experience will be dangerous for Atalanta which is clearly lacking of creative penetration without Papu Gomez in their starting IX. Ibrahimovic could even score more here. A narrow win for Milan is still very likely here.
